GORHAM – Brian Marshall ripped a two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inninng to break a 3-3 tie and lift the Southern Maine to a 5-4 victory over Salem State.

The Vikings (13-6) rallied in the ninth, but had the tying run thrown out at third base.

Sam Handy, who pitched three innings of one-hit, scoreless relief, earned the win, while Tip Fairchild of Monmouth registered the save after pitching the ninth inning.

USM sweeps Salem St.
GORHAM – Katie Mainville fired a no-hitter in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday to lead Southern Maine to a 2-0 win over Salem State.

The Huskies (17-3) scored both runs in the fourth inning. Kristen Tong led off the frame with a triple and scored on Christen Lachapelle’s single. Emily Forbes drove in Lachapelle with a single.

In the nightcap, the Huskies received a strong pitching performance from Melissa Hensderson, who scattered four hits and fanned all nine Salem State batters at least once. However, the Huskies needed a one-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh from Caterina Riitano to pull out a 3-2 triumph.
Lacrosse
Colby 14, USM 1
GORHAM – Mike Haines, Peter Lagos, and Tim Brown each tallied a hat trick to lead Colby to a 14-1 men’s lacrosse triumph over Southern Maine.

Haines gave the White Mules (7-2) a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the contest. Colby built the lead to 6-0 at the end of the first period and never looked back.

The Huskies (4-5) lone goal was scored by Matt Butler.
USM 13, RIC 12
PROVIDENCE – Jen Carboni scored five goals to lead Southern Maine to a 13-12 women’s win over Rhode Island College.

Tied 6-6 at the half, the Huskies built a 13-9 lead before surviving three late goals.
