LEWISTON – The condition of 19-year-old Joseph Chasse remained critical Saturday night after his vehicle collided with a tractor trailer truck on the Vietnam Veterans Bridge Friday, said a nursing supervisor from Central Maine Medical Center where Chasse is hospitalized.

The condition of Chasse’s passenger, Caitlin Cameron, 18, of Minot, was listed as stable on Saturday.

Both were in a Saturn driven by Chasse, of Lewiston, Friday when it collided with a tractor trailer truck on the bridge in Lewiston. The driver of the truck, Oakley Shedd, 36, was not injured.

The crash left Chasse’s vehicle crushed and mangled. The 2 p.m. accident tied traffic up for hours, forcing some motorists to wait 45 minutes or more in traffic, while others had to find different routes.

The crash remains under investigation by Lewiston police and the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Team.
