LEWISTON – Cony’s plan to shut down senior Lewiston attack Ben Fournier worked to perfection.

The Rams held one of the top middie’s in the league to just one goal, and most of his shots were from the perimeter. One small problem: Ben has a brother playing attack, and Cony forgot about him.

Sophomore Jon Fournier scored nine goals and had two assists to lead Lewiston to a season-opening 13-5 win over Cony (0-1) in lacrosse at Don Roux Field on Saturday.

“In shutting (Ben) down, we gave (Jon) a lane to the net,” Cony coach Deb Castonguay said. “We shut him down alright, but 14 (Jon) cleaned house because we were a shade off to the side covering 18 (Ben).”

“Ben will get his this year, too,” Lewiston coach Tom Fournier said. “But this year’s team is an attack-oriented team, whereas last year we had several talented middie’s that could score.”

The win puts Lewiston (1-0) a game ahead of where it was last season. The Blue Devils lost just one game last season, their season opener against Cheverus.

“That puts us ahead of where we were last year,” defenseman Steve Cobb said. “This is close to the same score, too.”

Lewiston’s defense, made up largely of veterans, allowed just 10 shots to reach the net all game, including just two in the opening quarter as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

“We have three three-year starters on defense, plus our goalie,” Tom Fournier said. “There is no question that they are the backbone of this team. Our biggest problem I think is going to be coming up with goals to support the solid defense.”

The first 10 minutes of the game on Saturday gave the coach some reassurance, as Zach Sheltra and Jon Fournier combined for five goals.

“They really blew us back early,” Castonguay said. “We were missing some key players in some key positions, and that hurt us, too.”

The Rams settled down in the second, and actually outscored Lewiston in the period, but the slow start doomed them down the stretch. Sheltra finished with two goals and two assists, while Bobby Labbe and Ben Fournier scored the other two goals.

Ryan Goldhammer had two goals to lead Cony. Joey Jones, Matt Edwards and Mike Kendall also slipped the ball past Lewiston netminder Billy Brooks.

Cony keeper Rick Brown stopped 22 shots in the loss.
