FARMINGTON – Colby College slipped past the University of Maine at Farmington Tuesday afternoon to post a 2-0 win in softball action.

Lauren Olmsted and Lindsey Toomey combined for four saves for their shutout win on the mound for the Colby victory. Miki Starr hit a double, while Elizabeth Riley was the only repeat hitter of the game.

Bowdoin sweeps Bates
LEWISTON – Rebekah Metzler hit a two-run home run to lead Bowdoin to a 4-1 win in the first game, and Emily Nelson allowed just four hits and struck out 10 in a 4-0 win in the second game to sweep Bates College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division Tuesday afternoon.

Bates took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game when Dayna Krakower smacked an RBI double down the left-field line. The Polar Bears tied the game in the top of the third and the score remained 1-1 until Metzler lifted a line drive over the left field wall in the sixth inning to give Bowdoin a 3-1 lead. Polar Bear catcher Laura Perovich added an RBI single in the seventh inning to cap the scoring.

Nelson was dominating on the mound in the second game for Bowdoin, allowing just two runners to reach second base. She was also a factor at the plate, knocking home the first two runs of the game with an RBI single through the middle in the fourth inning. Metzler added a two-run double later in the inning to give Nelson all the breathing room she needed.
USM sweeps
GORHAM – Katie Mainville and Melissa Henderson twirled a pair of complete-game wins as the University of Southern Maine swept a doubleheader over Plymouth State by identical scores of 2-0 in Little East Conference softball action Tuesday.

Game 1 featured a pitchers’ duel between Mainville and Kim Jeffs of Plymouth State (11-14). Neither side could manufacture a run until the bottom of the fifth, when Natasha Jackson stroked a one-out single and scored on a two-out double from Jessie Becher of South Paris.

The Huskies (24-5) added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Ashley Woodcock drew a walk to lead off the frame and later scored when Christen Lachapelle hit into a fielder’s choice. Mainville fanned nine and scattered three singles to improve to 13-1, while Jeffs, who fanned five and yielded six hits, fell to 7-8.

In the second game, Woodock drew a walk, stole second and took advantage of a pair of passed balls to score and give the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Huskies added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Darci Holland led off the inning with a single, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Caterina Riitano.

Henderson ensured the two runs would stand by fanning six and allowing just one walk and four hits to collect her 10th win of the season. Rose Eaton, who struck out two, walked two and gave up six hits through 6.1 innings was charged with the loss.
Women’s lacrosse

Colby 21, USM 6
GORHAM – Kara Wheeler, Sara Burlingham, Emma Miller and Julia Benedict netted three goals apiece to lead Colby College to a 21-6 victory over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The game remained close during the early portions of the first half before Colby gradually pulled away to a 15-3 halftime advantage. A goal from Jessi Superchi with 19:35 to play in the first half pulled the Huskies (2-8) within 3-2.

Colby (6-7) closed the half with a 12-1 scoring run. Burlingham highlighted the stretch by netting three goals, while Benedict added a pair.

Catharine O’Brien made five saves in net while earning the win.
Mens’ lacrosse

Bowdoin 8, Bates 6
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin men’s lacrosse team took a five-goal, third-quarter lead and held off a furious rally to take an 8-6 win in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon.

After Wes Couture gave Bates (2-7) a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the contest, Bowdoin (8-2) scored the next four goals to lead by three at halftime. Phil Stern, Ford Barker, Connor Fitzgerald and Ben Harris all collected a tally in the run, as the Polar Bears held Bates scoreless for the final 29:23 of the first half.

Bates closed the gap when Brendon Pitt scored at 1:22 of the third quarter, making it 4-2, but the Polar Bears racked up three straight in less than three minutes as Ford Gurall, Alex Weaver and Ryan Hurd gave Bowdoin a commanding 7-2 edge. Bates closed the third period with two straight goals from Peter Friedman, and clamped down on defense, allowing just one shot in the fourth quarter to Bowdoin.
USM 5, UMass-Boston 4
BOSTON – Mark St. John scored three goals, including the game-winner, and Matt Butler added a pair to lift the University of Southern Maine to a come-from-behind 5-4 triumph over the University of Massachusetts at Boston in Little East Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Trailing 2-1 at the break, the Huskies (5-6) received third-quarter goals from St. John and Butler to grab their first lead of the game at 3-2 with 10:36 to play. The Beacons (5-6) rallied to tie the game just 41 seconds later on freshman Chris Hanafin’s second goal of the game at 9:55. The Beacons regained the lead with 3:53 remaining in the third, when freshman Andrew Rowley converted a feed from Mike Forns.

Butler knotted the contest at 4-4 with 2:23 to play in the third off a feed from sophomore Chris Brooks, and St. John gave the Huskies the lead for good with an unassisted goal at 14:30 of the fourth quarter.

Mark Morrisette of Wales made seven saves in net for the Huskies, while Dan O’Neill had 12 saves for the Beacons.
