GORHAM – Sophomores Katie Mainville and Tip Fairchild of the University of Southern Maine Huskies softball and baseball teams were named the Little East Conference Pitchers of the Week for their outstanding efforts during the week of April 12-18.

In five appearances last week, Mainville compiled a 4-1 record with a miniscule 0.18 ERA. Among her four wins was the first no-hitter of her collegiate career. In all, she worked 38.1 innings allowing just 14 hits, one earned run and five walks while striking out 43. On the season, Mainville is 12-1 with one save and a 0.51 ERA.

Fairchild picked up the first LEC citation of his career after throwing a three-hit shutout against Keene State College Saturday. Fairchild retired the first 14 batters he faced before surrendering a single with two outs in the fifth inning. The 6-foot-2 hurler did not walk a batter during the nine-inning game and struck out a career-high 11 batters. On the season, Fairchild is 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA in seven appearances, including three starts. He has worked 30.2 innings, allowing 25 hits and seven walks while fanning a staff-high 33. Opponents are batting just .217 against him. Fairchild, who also plays second base, is hitting .316 with a team-high seven doubles, one triple, two home runs and 10 RBI.
Shields competes with Great Britain
ORONO – University of Maine men’s ice hockey senior Colin Shields recently completed playing for Great Britain in the 2004 IHF World Championships in Oslo, Norway.

Shields played in all five games for Great Britain, notching two assists.

Following the Black Bears appearance in the NCAA National Championship game, Shields flew to Norway for the first of five games on Monday, April 19.

He had an assist in the team’s 5-4 loss to Belarus and added an assist in the 6-0 win over Belgium.

This was the third straight year that Shields has competed for Great Britain in the World Championships.
