I would like to commend the Sun Journal for its pursuit to make the report regarding the arrest of Mayor Guay public. And, in the same breath, I am appalled at the actions of some of our elected officials.

First of all, it infuriates me to see that the city gave the Portland law firm an open check, which was nearly five times more than the original estimate. If that was not bad enough, an additional $13,803 was spent trying to keep the public from accessing what the law states we are entitled to. I find the city manager’s justification as outrageous. To say that we needed this to instill confidence in the Auburn Police Department is political hogwash. Do you think the money might have been better spent honoring the contract with our fire department or paying for the health insurance costs for our police department?

Let’s not forget Councilor Matzen’s comment about disservice and the rights of public officials. The disservice is wasting $29,072 of the Auburn taxpayers’ money and thinking that citizens of Auburn do not have a right to know the truth about the officials they elect to serve and represent our city.

Representation of our city is a 24/7 position. The citizens of Auburn have the right to know if their elected officials are not conducting themselves in an ethical and appropriate manner so that on Election Day we can make the right decision.
