WAYNE – The Western Maine Partnership, the Maranacook School District and the Kennebec Land Trust will co-sponsor the second annual Community and the Classroom Workshop from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, at the Wayne School.

This workshop, led by community studies teacher Theresa Kerchner, will highlight the local studies curriculum that has been developed over the past seven years at the Wayne school.

The curriculum has specific grade-level educational objectives. All of the studies seek to foster environmental stewardship and an appreciation for the history of the land and the people of Maine. These studies were initiated in 1996 with an oral history project.

The workshop will include an indoor presentation and a field visit to one of the sites that is currently being studied in Wayne. In addition, Wayne Elementary School Principal Donna McGibney, classroom teachers and members of the Wayne Historical Society will give presentations about the importance of this program in the school and community.

Teachers who attend will receive background materials that will outline the framework for developing a local studies program, including specific examples of how schools can work with historical societies and land trusts in Maine.
