PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Southern Maine pounded out 31 hits and scored 30 runs to sweep Plymouth State, 14-2 and 16-1, in doubleheader baseball action Saturday.

In the opener, the Huskies (17-8-1) exploded for 11 runs over the final two innings to break open a one-run game. Senior Adam Lemieux of Cumberland had four hits and three RBIs, while junior Greg Stacy recorded three hits and three RBIs.

In the nightcap, the Huskies scored in six of the first seven innings to give sophomore right-hander Tip Fairchild of Monmouth spenty of support to remain undefeated at 4-0.

Southern Maine blew the game open in the sixth inning by sending 13 batters to the plate. Stacy Stacy had another three hits and four RBIs.

Bates, Bowdoin split

LEWISTON – Bates senior Drew McKenna beat the play at the plate on an infield single by senior John O’Neill to win the opener, 9-8, before Bowdoin responded with four home runs to take a 14-6 win in the nightcap.

T.J. McLeod went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases and four runs scored to finish the day with five hits and five runs for the Polar Bears (19-11).

O’Neill was 5-for-9 for the Bobcats (11-13) while senior Nate Maxwell recorded a pair of doubles and five RBIs. Charlie Engasser and Kyohei Yamada hit home runs for Bates in Game 2.

Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin 13, Trinity 3

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin scored the game’s first four goals en route to a 13-3 victory over Trinity.

Colleen McDonald led the way with four goals, while Shoshana and Angela King added two apiece for the Polar Bears (10-6).

BIDDEFORD – Junior Ruth Ness (5 goals) converted a free-position shot with 1:45 left in regulation to give the University of New England a 14-13 win over COlby-Sawyer College in Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The Nor’easters (3-8) took a 9-4 lead into the halftime and then held on as the Chargers (4-8) reeled off five unanswered goals in a nine-minute span.

Middlebury 18, Bates 4

LEWISTON – Unbeaten Middlebury scored 13 goals in the first half and coasted to an 18-4 triumph over Bates.

Schuyler Winstead led the Panthers (13-0) with four goals and Nuala O’Donohoe added a hat trick. Sonija Parson scored twice for Bates (4-10).

Colby 12, Wesleyan 11

WATERVILLE – Emma Miller scored Colby’s final four goals, including the game-winning tally in overtime to lift the White Mules to a 12-11 triumph over Wesleyan.

Miller tied the game with 3:25 to play to force overtime. Kate Wheeler chipped in with three goals for Colby (7-7).

USM 17, Caselton 2

GORHAM – Autumn Wentworth netted three goals including the game winner and dished out a pair of assists to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 17-2 triumph over Caselton State.

After trading goals in the opening five minutes, the Huskies (3-9) scored 16 sonsecutive goals before the Spartans (1-9) could solve Jenna Wasylak (9 saves) in goal .

Jess Superchi found the back of the net at 22:38 for a lead SOuthern Maine would not relinquish and Wentworth added the game-winner just six second later in the lopsided rout.

Men’s lacrosse
Tufts 14, Bates 7

LEWISTON – Tufts snapped a 3-3 tie with three unanswered goals in the second quarter en route to a 14-7 victory over Bates.

Michael Hughes nearly matched the Bobcats’ scoring total with five goals. Peter Friedman led Bates (2-8) with a pair of goals.

Bates goalie Paul Kazarian recorded 27 saves.

E. Conn 15, USM 3

GORHAM – Five different players scored in the first quarter to send Eastern Connecticut to a 15-3 romp over Southern Maine.

Matt Kowalsky led the way for the Warriors with four goals. Three different players scored for USM (5-7).

Amherst 11, Bowdoin 2

BRUNSWICK – Amherst held Bowdoin to its lowest scoring total in 25 years with an 11-2 victory Saturday.

Leading 2-1 after one quarter, Amherst (8-4) scored the next seven goals to coast to victory.

Alex Weaver and Andy Nelson score for the Polar Bears (8-3).

Conn. College 11, Colby 8

WATERVILLE – Brendan Rampi scored a hat trick to lead Connecticut College to an 11-8 win over Colby College in men’s lacrosse NESCAC play Saturday afternoon.

The Camels also had a pair of goals from Russ Chase, Jordan Yearsley, and Jess WIlliams.

The White Mules (8-4) were led by Joshua Cleaver with three-goals and one assist. Ryan Scott chipped in with a pair of goals in the loss.

Softball
Bates 4, St. Joe’s 1

STANDISH – Kyla Decato had three hits and a pair of RBIs to lead Bates to a 4-1 women’s softball victory over St. Joseph’s.

Caitlin Murphy, Kelley Kugel and Andrea Lichtman chipped in with two hits apiece for the Bobcats. Sarah Klenakis scattered seven hits to earn the win.

Deborah Bain, Allyson Ferguson and Dee Regan led the Monks with two hits each.

Colby 8, Bates 0

STANDISH – Elizabeth Riley pounded out three hits, including a triple, to pace Colby’s 10-hit attack as the White Mules blanked Bates 8-0 in a softball game played at St. Joseph’s College.

Wendy Bonner knocked in four runs for Colby, while Miki Starr added a pair of doubles. Lindsey Toomey tossed a six-hitter, fanned four and walked none in the five-inning shutout.

Dayna Krakower had two hits for the Bobcats.

Bowdoin sweeps

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin received fine pitching from Erin Hanley and Emily Nelson to sweep a doubleheader from Trinity by scores of 2-1 and 4-2.

Hanley allowed three hits and one unearned run in five and one-third innings before Nelson came in to earn the save. Nelson followed with a six-hit complete game in the nightcap.

In the opener, Bowdoin (21-8) broke a 1-1 tie in the second when Caitlin Polistena singled, was sacrificed to second, stole third and scored on an error. Five singles in the first inning of Game 2 led to three runs.

UNE drops pair

NEWPORT, R.I. – Alison Philbrick drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the sixth to break a tie, giving the Salve Regina University a 2-1 win in the nightcap, along with a 4-2 win the opener over the University of New England.

The Seahawks (19-17-1) struck for four runs in the first inning of Game 1 and held on defensively as sophomore Amanda Michaud relieved for two perfect frames to record the save.

USM drops pair

KEENE, N.H. – Junior pitcher Meghan McLoughlin threw a complete-game, four hitter in the opener and senior Abby Collis ripped a two-run double in the nightcap to send Keene State to the LEC regular-season title with 2-1 and 5-1 victories.

The first game featured a pitchers’ duel between McLoughlin and sophomore Katie Mainville.

After three scoreless innings, Kristen Tong belted a double for the Huskies (28-7) and later scored on a wild pitch. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the sixth when the Owls (25-7) scored on a single and an error.

In Game 2, the Owls scratched for five runs over six innings, before senior Emily Forbes drove in sophomore Caterina Riitano.
