AUGUSTA – Seven community college students will be honored for their academic and personal achievements and service to their communities at a ceremony hosted by the Maine Community College System board of trustees at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, at the Senator Inn.

The winners are: Rachael Begin of Jay, Jessica Trundy of Brooks, Amanda Bubar of St. Albans, Cherie Black of Monticello, Trisha May of South Portland, Eric Voelker of Hampden and Nicole Merryman of Waterboro.

The winners were selected by college faculty and staff. Each will be awarded a John H. Lapoint Jr. Leadership Award of $1,000.

The board of trustees will meet prior to the awards ceremony at the System Office at 323 State St. The board agenda is available on the Web site at www.mccs.me.edu.

YMCA Camp open house

WINTHROP – The YMCA Camp of Maine, on Lake Cobbosseecontee in East Winthrop, will hold its annual open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16.

Interested parents and campers are invited to visit the camp on Route 135 South for tours, refreshments and to meet the camp director and staff.

The camp will offer a variety of programs for boys and girls ages 5 to 16, including summer resident camping, day camping, outdoor adventure trip programs and leadership training.

Rose society to meet

MANCHESTER – The Mid-Maine Rose Society will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Longfellow’s Greenhouse, Puddledock Road. A workshop will be held at 2 p.m.

Cemetery association

LOVELL – The Maine Old Cemetery Association will meet Saturday, May 22, at the Lovell United Church of Christ, 1174 Main St., hosted by the Lovell Historical Society. Registration will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.

The featured speaker will be retired University of Maine Professor Sandy Ives, whose topic will be “Stump Tombstones in Maine.” A business meeting will be followed by a brief talk on Lovell cemeteries and town history by Roberta Chandler.

Registration is $3. Lunch will be available for $5, but must be ordered and prepaid by sending $5 to Cheryl Patten, 1161 East Pond Road, Smithfield, ME 04978 before May 11. Those wishing may bring their own lunch. Anyone with interest in Maine cemeteries is welcome.
