PARIS – The annual Spring College Admissions Workshop for juniors and their parents will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, in the forum at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.
John Parkman, coordinator of counseling services for SAD 17 and director of guidance at the school, said parents and students from any grade level are welcome to attend.
The focus of the evening is part of a series of college life workshops that continue next fall. It will be geared to juniors and their parents and guardians.
This is a very important meeting for all parents at OHCHS who plan on having their son or daughter go on to a post-secondary institution after graduation in June 2005, Parkman said.
A panel of college admissions and financial aid counselors will present general information from the perspective of a private four-year college, the public college area University of Maine System and the community college system. There will also be a representative from a college financial aid office who will concentrate on the maze of information surrounding how to pay for college.
The other panel member brings a unique perspective to the audience. Greg Knight recently was the parent of a senior who was applying to colleges and for financial aid and will offer insight into the parental side of the experience.
Parkman said, “This is one of the first times in my career I’ve invited a parent to share his experiences first hand, and I really don’t know why I didn’t think of doing this before. It will be a great opportunity for parents to hear what it’s like from one of their own.”
For more information and other services provided by the counseling offices, phone the OHCHS Guidance Department at 743-8914, ext. 2206, or 2257.
