There are 183,402 people age 65 or older living in Maine. They make up 14.4 percent of the state’s population. Nationally, older adults make up 12 percent of the population.
By 2025, one in five Maine residents will be over the age of 65.
Approximately 17,879 Maine residents over the age of 65 survive on incomes below or near the federal poverty level.
Maine ranks fourth in the nation for percentage of residents age 65 and over who are between 101 and 200 percent below the federal poverty level.
Franklin County has 29,467 residents, 4,184 of them over 65 and 1,893 over 75.
Androscoggin County as 103,793 residents, 14,962 over 65 and 7,590 over 75.
Oxford County has 54,755 residents, 8,793 of them over 65 and 4,104 over 75.
The 2000 Census identified 8,209 people 65 to 74 years and 9,670 people 75 years and over living in Maine as below the federal poverty level. There are 382 Franklin County residents over the age of 65 who are below the federal poverty level, 1,532 in Androscoggin County and 831 in Oxford County.
