It is with great concern that I write regarding the Palesky plan for tax reform.

My husband and I will both be losing our jobs within the next month. Since we are both nearing senior citizen age, I have been researching ways to preserve our current finances. At first, the Palesky plan caught my eye.

I then began to look further into the structure of the plan, which was originally designed for California. I soon learned that what appeared to be a great plan on the surface actually contained some drastic effects for Maine citizens if it is passed.

Our municipal services would be affected in a very dangerous way. These are services that some take for granted. Our police and fire departments would be hurt, if not destroyed, by its passage. Our public works departments would also be affected, leaving our roads unplowed and buildings not maintained. Those who now have curbside trash collection would have to pay the nearly $2 a gallon price for gas to take our trash to a recycling center that may or may not be open at all or open only during certain hours. Our libraries and our recreation departments would also suffer.

It now appears that the Palesky proposal will be put to the voters of Maine in November. I earnestly petition each Maine citizen to do their own examination of this plan and its destructive effects for the town governments here in Maine.
