PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The planned parade of the Tall Ships is back on, following a change in its route and where the ships will dock.

The parade had been called off earlier this month after shoreline communities said they were not willing to foot the bill for the extra police and other services needed to handle the expected spectators.

Gov. Don Carcieri said the ships will dock at Goat Island in Newport.

That change helped lower the costs of security.

In addition, Conventures, the company managing the Sail Rhode Island event, has agreed to pay up to $175,000 to cover security costs.

If security costs more than that, the state, city of Newport and local partners will pay the remainder, according to the governor.

“We are confident these new arrangements will ensure a safer and more successful event,” Carcieri said.

Dusty Rhodes, president of Conventures, said the move to Newport is a positive step.

“The new venue at Goat Island in Newport will allow us to safely host the thousands of anticipated visitors at a lower cost while accommodating the needs of these magnificent ships,” Rhodes said.
