LEWISTON – Edith Louise Lane, 96, a resident since July of 2001 of Marshwood Health Care Center in Lewiston, prior resident of the Auburn Home for Aged Women from 1993 to 2001, and former resident of Greene, died Friday morning, April 30, at Marshwood.

She was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Mechanic Falls, the oldest of 16 children. She was the daughter of Thomas and Annie Spiller Merrill.

She was a 1926 graduate of Jordan High School in Lewiston.

She worked as an office clerk at Clark Shoe Company in Auburn for many years before retiring.

She was married to Harold Footman from Sept. 26, 1926 to July 18, 1973 when he passed away. She later married Edgar Lane on Jan. 10, 1976 in Greene. He passed away Jan. 31, 1991.

She was a member of the Baptist Church of Greene, the Mothers Class of the Baptist Church of Greene and Greene Senior Citizens. She enjoyed cooking molasses cookies and doughnuts, reading, knitting, crocheting, playing cards, eating ice cream and having tea. She especially loved the time she spent with her family.

She is survived by one son, Harold Footman Jr. and his wife Ardis of Greene; three daughters, Pauline Beckey and her husband Robert of Greene, Ruby Austin and her husband Horton of Wales, and Sharon Ray and her husband Richard, also of Greene; two stepsons, Edgar Lane Jr. of Turner, and Alan Lane and his wife Caroline of Goffstown, N.H.; one stepdaughter, Carol Smarz of Ledyard, Conn.; five stepbrothers, Peter, Harland, Chester, Floyd, and Mark Merrill; six stepsisters, Gladys Gerry, Alice Burnell, Dolly Chick, Myrtle Brady, Thelma Voutour, and Beatrice Nason; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Lorraine Footman; a granddaughter; Holly Trinh; two brothers, Edmund and Merle Merrill; and two stepbrothers, Harry and Robert Merrill.
