PARIS – The Foster-Carroll Post 72, American Legion, and Auxiliary members will seek donations for veterans and their families during May Poppy Days. Gift certificates are given to help area veterans’ families during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

During the last meeting on April 14, Department Past President Jerri Greenwell was the guest speaker after the potluck supper. She told about the effort she and her husband, Jerry Greenwell, have made to have legislation enacted and public awareness called to prevention of bacterial meningitis through vaccinations of college age youth. The Greenwells’ son died unexpectedly last year from that disease.

She also spoke of seeing the groundbreaking ceremony for the World War II Monument in Washington, D.C., which will be dedicated on May 29. They also went to the Creative Arts Festival where patients of Veterans Administration hospitals displayed their paintings, songs, poetry and crafts.

Recent donations made during the Auxiliary’s business sessions have been $50 to the Kennebec Girl Scout Council, $50 to the Progress Center for Special Olympics, sponsoring of three girls to Girls State at $185 with $40 pocket money for each, $75 to the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Monument, $50 to the Pine Tree Council, $25 to Project Graduation and $20 to the DECA trip to Nashville.

Girls State delegates sponsored by Unit 72 are Jillian Cole, Alicia Flick and Abigail Rogers. Alternates are Randi Arsenault, Melissa Brown and Ann-Marie Foster.

Secretary-treasurer Marilyn Ramsay announced that the March 15 corned beef supper and dance raised around $480. The April 10 roast pork super and Chinese auction raised $1,500.

Legion and Unit members will provide and serve refreshments for area Special Olympics athletes and their helpers at the Gouin Field Track meet on Thursday, May 13.
