DIXFIELD – Someone went on a spree ripping up lawns late Sunday night or early Monday morning. Grassy areas in four areas of town were damaged.
Police Chief Richard Pickett wants to find out who is responsible.
He said someone driving a vehicle, apparently doing power turns, dug up a portion of the Lady Cougars’ softball field in Marble Park off Coburn Avenue, including a recently excavated area. Apparently the same person then drove to nearby Dixfield Elementary School, crossed the sidewalk then did power turns that damaged a grassy area between the school and a modular classroom.
A similar incident occurred in the yard of a home on Blayne Street where a vehicle drove between the ends of a new fence then tore through the lawn.
The vehicle apparently proceeded to Dirigo Middle School, a short distance from Blayne Street, where Pickett said the most damage of all occurred. He said the vehicle drove onto the ball field between the tennis courts and a modular classroom tearing up the sod.
“It looks like an S,’ like someone was trying to make a figure 8.’ There’s at least a good 100 feet or better,” said Pickett.
He said the four incidents appear to have been done by the same vehicle. The amount of damage has not been estimated.
Pickett wants anyone who knows anything about the vandalism or who may have heard or seen anything late Sunday night or early Monday to call him at the Dixfield Police Department at 562-4517.
