EXPERIENCE – Supreme Court justice, 1990-present; judge on 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, 1990; New Hampshire Supreme Court justice, 1983-90; New Hampshire Superior Court justice, 1978-83; New Hampshire attorney general, 1976-78; deputy attorney general 1971-76; assistant attorney general, 1968-71; associate at law firm of Orr and Reno in Concord, N.H., 1966-68.

FAMILY – Single. Only child of Joseph Souter, a banker who died in 1982, and Helen Souter, a homemaker who died in 1995.

HOBBIES – Hiking, mountain climbing, running and reading.
