David Wing is retiring.

TURNER – Leavitt Area High School is losing its principal.

David Wing, head of the 700-student school that serves Turner, Greene and Leeds, has submitted his resignation. He will leave at the end of the school year.

According to assistant school board chairman Wallace Veilleux, Wing plans to retire. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Before taking the job at Leavitt, Wing was principal of Maranacook High School in Readfield and Oak Hill High School in Wales. He’s been principal of Leavitt Area High School since 2001.

During his time at Leavitt, the school has faced its share of ups and downs, from award-winning student groups to bomb threats. The school made headlines in March when several seniors were suspended for paddling freshmen.

The school board plans to form a search committee to find Wing’s replacement. The school system will accept applications for the position until May 12.

“Our intention is to have someone on board by summer,” Veilleux said.
