LEWISTON – Chester Roland Verrill, 91, a longtime resident of 444 Main Street, died Saturday at Marshwood Nursing Home following a long illness.
He was born in Auburn, Aug. 26, 1912, the son of Everett and Melvena Maxim Verrill. He was educated the schools of Auburn and was a 1929 Graduate of Edward Little High School. On April 11, 1936 he married the former M. Madelyn Adams.
He and his spouse were the owners and operators of The Hammond Photography studio of Lewiston for over 40 years. He was also the Staff Photographer for Poland Springs before retiring in 1980.
He was a very active member of several local fraternal organizations including, the federated Church now The Calvary Methodist Church of Lewiston, The Lewiston/Auburn Kwanis Club, The Independent Order of The Odd Fellows Lodge# 23, Center Minot Grange, Ashlar Lodge # 105 A.F. & A.M. where in 1947 he served as Master, member and past worthy Patron of Mount Olivet O.E.S. #29, Kora Shrine Temple where he had served as Photographer and Publicity Director and was an honorable member of The Arab Patrol, the York Rite where he was a recipient of the order of the Red Cross of Constanine, the Androscoggin Square and Compass club, Rugged Cross White Shrine # 2 of Jerusalem and several other Masonic bodies or sub committees where he had served as either a member or officer.
He enjoyed spending time with his family especially at the Verrill family cottage on Bailey Island.
Survivors include his wife, of 68 years of Lewiston; daughter Mrs. Melvyn ( Melvena M.) King of Tucson, Ariz.; son Thomas F. Verrill and wife, Ann of Auburn; sister Miss Edith Verrill of San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Stephen King, Timothy King and wife, Cathy, Mrs. Pierre (Maria) LaPointe, Jonathan King, Mrs. Ben (Anna) Clark, Mrs. Todd (Amy) Spencer, Mary Verrill, Betsy Verrill and Jane Verrill and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one brother and four sisters.
