LEWISTON – Lewiston Emblem Club 528 will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at the Lewiston Lodge of Elks, 1675 Lisbon St. All members are encouraged to attend.

The club is affiliated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and is looking for new members. For more information, contact Emblem Club President Kathleen Cotterly at 998-2282.

Seniors dinner

AUBURN – The New Auburn Senior Citizens will host a Chinese chop suey dinner with all the fixings at noon Wednesday, May 19, at the St. Louis Church basement hall. Cost is $3 and it is for members only. Members are asked to get their tickets no later than one week prior to the dinner.

The regular meeting was held May 5 with Virginia Levasseur, president, presiding. May birthdays were noted and small gifts given.

Pot of gold winners were Madeline Blais, Theresa Labrie, Jack Cody and June Dupont. The winners of the Mother’s Day gifts were Jeannette Parise and Mary Lawlor.

Plans are being made to go to Julien’s on May 27 and a sign-up sheet will be circulated or call Ginger at 783-0273.

Members who will display one of their crafts on Wednesday, June 16, need to bring in their craft Tuesday, June 15, between 2 and 4 p.m. at the St. Louis Church basement so they can be displayed. Prizes will be awarded.

Seniors speaker

AUBURN – First Auburn Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Hasty Community Center, Pettengill Park. The board of directors will meet at 10 a.m.

Assistant City Manager of Auburn Mark Adams will speak on the proposed tax cap. The annual memorial service will be held, directed by Lucy Cowles. There will be no raffle, but tickets will be sold for the June 16 Italian sandwich lunch. If time permits, bingo will be played.

On Thursday, May 20, the monthly brunch will take place, with any and all members welcome.

Members gathered at Martindale Country Club for the anniversary dinner on May 5. Lucy Cowles introduced past presidents and spouses seated at the head table as follows: Helen Gatchell, Joyce Poole, Audrey Fleming, Roger Briggs, Nelson Edwards and wife, Patricia; William Redmun and wife, Marilyn.

Pot of gold winners were Glenys Ryder, Roger Briggs, Andre Giasson, Felix Yurkston, Roy Tassanari, Lucy Cowles, Millie Brainerd, Pat Edwards, Joanne Cyr and Doris Michael.

Mitchell Thomas and Harry Coddington Jr. entertained with a musical program.

AUBURN – The Auburn VFW last breakfast of the season will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 16, at the post home at 588 Minot Ave. The public is invited. Prices, from $2.50 to $3.50, will include coffee and juices.

The breakfasts will resume in September, as the VFW year runs from July 1 to the following June 30.

Don Linscott, chairman, said, “This first season was a great success, helping the post to continue its annual giving to Little League, the VFW National Home for Children and Operation Uplink (phone cards for overseas servicemen and hospitalized veterans), Auburn’s Blue Christmas and Special Olympics.

All veterans who have served overseas, were honorably discharged, received a campaign or occupation medal or served in Korea from July 1949 through a future indeterminable date or who at anytime received “Hostile Fire Pay” are encouraged to join in the fight for veterans benefits and the recognition due them and their families.

Corps Raffle

GRAY – The Gray Region Citizen Corps will hold a raffle at the display table during the Gray Fire-Rescue EMS Week open house on Sunday, May 16.

The local group of volunteers is raising funds to purchase equipment for those who choose to help their neighbors during a large disaster, such as the ice storm of 1998.

Equipment to be purchased includes hard hats, reflective vests, supplies for a volunteer center and educational materials. Prizes will include a personal survival kit.

The corps holds an educational seminar monthly. The topic for June will be bicycle safety.

Historical society

NEW GLOUCESTER – The New Gloucester Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road.

Richard D. Morin, co-owner of Wood Sprite Orchids, will speak about his business of growing orchids and how they can be cultivated at home.

There will be a short business meeting and refreshments prior to Morin’s talk.

Bridge winners

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on May 10 were: N/S, first, Lucille Bilodeau and Roger Briggs; second, Joann Morris and Janice Wolfe; third, Betty and Doug Sise; fourth, Connie Simpson and Alberta Turner.

E/W, first, Judy Agnew and Hilda Monk; second, Joan Bergeron and Jeanne Plourde; third, Shirley Banks and Eileen Potvin; fourth, Marta Clements and Nancy Farmer.
