NORWAY – The Fare Share Commons, under the auspices of the Commons Arts Collective, will host a show with highlights from more than 20 years of creative work by Westbrook-based artist and Collective member Mary Brooking.

The show, titled “Bearings” will open with a public reception from 7-9 p.m. June 4 through June 26, at Fare Share Commons, Main Street. Brooking received a bachelor’s in fine arts from Hiram College in Ohio in 1978 and has shown her work at venues in Ohio, New Mexico and Portland, Maine, and has participated in two group shows at the Fare Share Commons.

Over the years Brooking has explored a variety of media including acrylic, oil and watercolor painting, graphite and charcoal drawing, pottery and found object sculpture. Recently, she has concentrated mainly on painting with acrylics because, she said, “the immediacy and speed of application reflect my artistic philosophy at this time: Just do it and quit overanalyzing everything.” Working in this medium also fits her lifestyle as a mother of young children.

Brooking will host one in an ongoing series of Conversations with the Artists at 7 p.m., Sunday, June 13. The public is invited to come and discuss her work with her.

The Commons Art Collective was formed in 2001 to encourage creation and sharing of local art through support, interaction and collaboration.

The Fare Share Commons operates as a year-round gallery with monthly openings.

The CAC is supported by its members, gallery-goer donations and, recently, a grant from the Maine Community Foundation Expansion Arts Fund.
