For the past 20 years or so, we have been squawking about the absence of citizen interest in voting and the running of the state and local, as well as national, governments.

So far, nothing seems to budge these reluctant citizens. I see regular reporting about the political and practical application of politics, with little effect. I would like to make one more plea for real participation of our newspapers in at least local and statewide politics through doing an even better job of providing the people with the facts.

How about a regular (every election) section containing all the available information about the incumbents, those up for re-election and the newcomers, along with a summary of our existing problems and the proposed solutions. Perhaps a newspaper debate between candidates along with summary discussions of our existing and new problems and with readers opinions would help. Anything to urge voters to participate.

It just seems a shame to let the state continue to deteriorate without at least a try.
