LEWISTON – Physicians from Central Maine Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Program will be the featured speakers at a Central Maine Healthcare Community Breakfast Forum set for Thursday, May 20.
Dr. N. Burgess Record Jr., medical director for prevention and outreach at the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, will discuss “Prevention, Screening and Living with Heart Disease” at the breakfast presentation from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the CMMC Conference Center, ground floor, 12 High Street Medical Office Building.
In 1974 Record and his wife, Sandy, a registered nurse, supported by Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, established the Western Maine Center for Heart Health. The prevention, screening and risk factor control program developed by the center has been recognized as one of the world’s longest lasting and most successful community cardiovascular health initiatives.
With 30 years of proven results, the “Franklin Health Model” has been associated with improvements in health behaviors (such as smoking cessation), risk factor control (such as high blood pressure), perceived quality of life, health resource utilization (such as preventable hospitalizations), reduced healthcare costs, improved life expectancy and lower death rates.
One aspect of the Franklin Model’s outreach and prevention program is the screening program it offers to identify people with risk factors for developing cardiac disease or those who have emergent cardiac disease and might benefit from intervention. The Franklin Model’s ScoreKeeper risk assessment service offers the services of specially trained nurses, supported by Franklin ScoreKeeper software, who offer individualized health risk screening, counseling, referral and follow-up. The ScoreKeeper service is now being offered regularly by CMHVI.
The forum is open to the public. Those wishing to attend the breakfast are asked to call 795-2957 or e-mail [email protected].
The entrance to the 12 High Street Building is located across the street from the CMMC parking garage. Free parking is available in the garage and in adjacent parking lots.
