AUBURN – It seemed that every time Katie Morin came to the plate Thursday afternoon, it proved costly for the Edward Little softball team.

Between her double that led off the game, two hits that prompted EL errors and an RBI triple that broke a 2-2 tie, Morin nearly beat the Red Eddies on her own in a 6-2 Lewiston victory.

“Katie Morin is the heart and soul of this team,” said Lewiston coach Fred Royer. “She rallied them today in great fashion.”

Morin scored twice and had two hits. Two other at bats led to EL errors, the second of which helped score another run. She was also stellar in the field, gobbling up a number of grounders and chasing down a Jenny Verrill pop up.

“I have good games and bad games,” said Morin of her offensive production. “It all depends on the team. If the team hits well, everybody hits well.”

After knocking off top-ranked Brunswick Wednesday, the Blue Devils (11-5) were prime candidates for a letdown. Lewiston got an early 2-0 lead. When EL (4-12) rallied to tie, Lewiston broke things open with two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

“EL is always a different game,” said Morin. “You’ve got to have it in your heart. We started off the game not as pepped as we ended the last game. We kind of had to start over. Once we started to get more talkative on the bench, we started doing better in the field hitting-wise.”

Though Lewiston awaits the final Heal Point standings and a playoff pairing, EL’s season likely ended. Even with a win over the Blue Devils, EL coach Gene Keene figures his team, ranked 15th in the latest standings, couldn’t have risen high enough to make the cut.

“I told the kids if you play sports long enough, you have seasons that don’t go the way you want them to,” said Keene. “That doesn’t mean they’re bad players, and it doesn’t mean they don’t work hard. It just meant it wasn’t their time.”

Though EL rallied from a 2-0 deficit, it couldn’t overcome defensive mistakes and quiet bats.

Lewiston got the runs in the fourth when a Jess Nadeau pop up fell between the shortstop and right fielder. Morin then delivered a triple and scored on a Nicole Caron bunt. EL couldn’t make up the difference, producing just four hits the last four innings against Amanda Michaud.

“It was a cross-section of our season,” said Keene. “All season long when we needed a hit, we didn’t get a hit. When we needed a play on D’, we didn’t make a play on D’. When we need to make a pitch in a certain spot, we didn’t make a pitch in a certain spot. All three of those happened at crucial times today.”

Lewiston added runs in the sixth when Nadeau and Allie Morin scored on bunts by Katie Morin and Caron.

“They did a nice job picking up a couple of runs,” said Royer. “Amanda got stronger as the game went along. We did some nice things there with the short game also.”

Lewiston built the 2-0 lead in the first when Kim Bechard singled in Katie Morin. Steph Lagasse later singled in Michaud.

EL got one back in the bottom of the inning when Kate Dargie singled home Christie Sasser. In the second, EL tied it on a Verrill single that scored Kelly Constantine.
