MEXICO – It was to little too late for the Mountain Valley girls’ lacrosse team, who fell short of completing its second-half rally Friday.

Falmouth received scoring from six players, including two goals from Kate Hambley, and goalie Brett Archambeault turned in a solid performance as the Yachtsmen held on for a 7-4 win.

Jess Allen and Sam Johnson scored two goals apiece as the Falcons fought back to trail 5-4 with 6:51 left in the game. Mountain Valley (5-8) led in shots on goal, however, a majority missed the net.

“We had nine shots in the first half that didn’t touch anything,” Falcon coach Rick White said. “But, that goalie. It’s almost impossible to come away with a win with someone like her in goal.”

Falmouth (5-6) survived an onslaught for nearly 15 minutes in the second half as the Falcons attacked relentlessly. Archambault (20 saves) stayed back in the crease and shots by Allen and Ashley Arsenault deflected off her body.

Falmouth had taken a 5-1 lead on a goal by Rachel Bennett, but the Falcons responded with three unanswered goals. Johnson carried the ball in for 20 yards on two occasions to score.

Allen then made a drive from 35 yards and deked defenders, before depositing the ball into the top shelf. Johnson assisted on Allen’s initial goal.

“We had to open things up,” White said. “We tried some screens to get people (quality) shots. But the girls are shooting from the side, instead of from going over the top and the ball goes in that direction.”

Falmouth had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. Kate Costa, Katrina Caster, Shannon Goggin and Hambley each scored. Falcons goalie Stephanie Dragoon, a freshman, had 11 saves and sweeper Erin Stearns was also busy.

“I was very pleased with the team performance,” Falmouth coach Robin Haley said. “We had some trouble with our passing. But, I felt they made a couple of big adjustments in the second half and came up with those two goals at the end.”
