At the Masters golf tournament, it’s called “moving day.” At the Indianapolis 500, “bump day” is the newest buzz word.
At the Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race, Sunday became “survival day.”
At least six teams had dropped out by early evening on Sunday after a night of harsh weather. Tough roads made for difficult overnight mountain biking.
“The leaders are about five hours behind where we expected they would be,” said Racing Ahead Inc.’s Andy Chakoumakos.
At last check, the racers were paddling across Checkpoint 14, just south of Moose Mountain, nearing Pond in the River along the Rapid River, just below Lower Richardson Lake.
“Most of the racers are still in pretty good spirits, it seems,” Chakoumakos said. “There was some difficulty in navigation for some teams because it was raining through the night. There are some teams that are seven, eight, even 10 hours behind.”
Team No. 18, Team SRS, was leading through the Rapid River portage, just about an hour ahead of Team ATP. Following them were Team Crested Butte and Team Yukon/Runningfree.ca.
Because of the slower-than-expected splits at some of the early checkpoints, the racing staff has eliminated some of the trekking checkpoints in the mountains of New Hampshire, which will hopefully allow the racers to finish closer to the target time.
“We made a few changes to help them out a bit,” Chakoumakos said. “We also had a deadline of 2 a.m. for teams to reach Transition Area No. 4 (just North of Cummings Mountain in New Hampshire) that we have extended to 6 a.m.”
In all, five teams had officially dropped out of the race by 6:30 p.m. Sunday, and three others had lost at least one team member and were officially disqualified but chose to continue on.
Team Nomad, the only team with Maine-based members, officially dropped out of the race at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday after missing Checkpoint No. 9.
Other teams out of the race include Team Vegan, Team Human Factor, Team Another Adventure and Team Double Down. Teams down a person include Team Blind Faith, Team Genesis/Timex and Team Befit2.com/Trailblazers.
Of the 19 teams eligible to win automatic entry into the World Championships, 14 remain in the race.
