MEXICO – A new farmers’ market and more landscaped and flowered green spaces dotting the town are among the plans of the Citizens Advisory Committee.
Committee Chairwoman Louise Arsenault said the new market begins on Friday, May 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the rear of the town office. With the new addition, area residents and tourists will have a chance to buy fresh, homegrown produce and flowers, maple syrup, seedlings and perhaps artwork three days a week. The River Valley Farmers Market is opened at the Opera House in Dixfield on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Rumford information center.
Arsenault said a fund-raising public harvest supper will be held at the town hall at the end of the season in October.
The CAC has also decided to join with the River Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Adopt-A-Spot program. Individuals and businesses can begin registering to sponsor one of about 20 green spaces around town through the Mexico Town Office this week. Those who adopt a spot promise to beautify, keep clean and maintain a public green space, such as a portion of the Mexico Greens or the Ridlonville rock memorial.
Arsenault said she hopes people will choose their spots by the first of June.
Town Manager Joseph Derouche said Mexico is one of the first towns in Oxford County to begin plans for celebrating the county’s bicentennial next year. The town and the CAC are planning events to mark the ride through town with the county’s charter by a courier on horseback.
Arsenault said plans call for a townwide celebration at a date to be determined next May. The horseback rider will visit many of the county’s towns and hand over copies of the charter to fourth-graders in several of these towns’ schools.
Arsenault said the committee is also planning for several, small, townwide festivals or events to take place throughout the year.
