FARMINGTON – In an effort to remember their daughter’s true passion and devotion for life, Steve and Julie Shible presented the seventh annual Jamie Beth Shible Memorial Scholarship Award to two Mount Blue seniors Friday.

Eighteen year-olds Krista Hastings and Elizabeth Ryder were presented with the scholarship for their exceptional performances in cheerleading and within the school community as well.

Hastings and Ryder are the 14th and 15th recipients of the award. Both spent majority of their high school careers cheering for Mount Blue athletic teams. Along with having their names engraved on the memorial plaque, each received a $500 scholarship to be awarded after their first semester in college, a bouquet of flowers and their a tribute video of Jamie.

Hastings will take part in the general studies program at Southern Maine Community College while Ryder will study architecture and civil engineering at Central Maine Community College.

Jamie died suddenly from bacterial meningitis on Memorial Day in 1997, just days before the end of her junior year. A co-captain of her varsity cheerleading team, Jamie was one of the first two freshmen ever chosen to the high school squad. She was an avid skier, skater and volleyball player who loved dancing with her friends and was a huge fan of country music star Garth Brooks.

“She was a mentor and loved to be involved in everything,” said Julie Shible.
