AUGUSTA – The State Envirothon will be held Thursday, May 27, at the Pine Tree State Arboretum.

Eighteen teams from 15 high schools will vie for the state’s Outstanding Envirothon Team. The teams, representing the top three scoring high schools from six regional competitions held in May, will be tested in an outdoor setting on topics including forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and this year’s issue – natural resource management in the urban environment.

Area teams participating will be Cony High School Team 1 and Team 2, Mt. Ararat High School of Topsham (tied), Edward Little and Jay.

In late July, Maine’s first-place team will travel to Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va., to compete at the international Canon Envirothon competition.

Hosted and organized by the Maine Association of Conservation Districts Education and Envirothon Committee, Maine’s Envirothon is funded by grants, sponsorships and contributions from many agencies and organizations.

The major objective is to provide opportunities for students to acquire and increase their outdoor skills and scientific knowledge about Maine’s natural resources so that they can make informed, educated decisions about the environment.

An Envirothon web site for all interested students is available at www.Envirothon.org.
