I was most intrigued by the recent letter to the editor May 22 from Ed and Diana Cundy suggesting that the Catholic Church should lose its tax-exempt status because it advocates a political stance.

Ignoring the very considerable First Amendment obstacles, the writers’ proposal opens some interesting doors. Would the writers propose we also deny tax-exempt status to the Unitarian-Universalist Church? The Humane Society of the United States? Planned Parenthood? Or would they propose we deny tax-exempt status only to groups that are in opposition to their views?

It would be interesting to find out.
