LEWISTON – Walter W. Haynes of Lewiston died May 25, after a short illness.
Born in Hermon, April 21, 1907, the son of Carl C. and Vangie Sweetser Haynes, he graduated from Bangor High School and Northeastern University, Class of 1928.
He married Ella Chandler in Plymouth, Mass., where they resided before coming to Lewiston in 1933. Mr. Haynes owned and managed the Stover Broom Co. for 47 years, retiring in 1979, and moving to Homestead, Fla.
Upon the death of Ella in 1997, he moved back to Lewiston to live with his daughter and son-in-law, John and Mary Bussell.
Mr. Haynes was active in local and state government, serving on the Police, Fire, Public Works and Finance Commissions in Lewiston and the Governor’s Counsel when Ed Muskie was governor. He was a member of the Androscoggin County Republican Committee, Lewiston Lodge of Elks and was a Blue Lodge master Mason, Lynde Lodge No. 174 in Hermon for 75 years. Mr. Haynes enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling with his wife of 68 years.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, John and Mary Bussell; grandchildren, John and Sally Bussell of Winthrop and Mary Hawkins Morin of Lewiston; great-grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Lacombe, John and Amanda Hawkins, Holly Bussell and Mary E. Morin, all of Lewiston.
