It’s wrong using misinformation to smear reputations of strong leaders when promoting political candidates. Jacqueline Smith’s letter (May 19) and analysis of what she thinks Lewiston people need is inaccurate.

Sen. Peggy Rotundo works to protect the interests of state employees and retirees. There was no vote to “raid” the Maine State Retirement Fund as Smith describes. Sen. Rotundo would not support such a measure.

A member of the Committee on Appropriations, she voiced objection to cuts in state programs that would result in state job loss. Supported by Maine’s State Employee’s Union, she voted for stronger protections of health benefits for retirees so they receive the same benefits active employees receive.

Finally, Rotundo, advocated for a $15 million increase in General Purpose Aid, helping local school and city budgets.

It’s not my place to decide what Lewiston people need. However, they deserve accurate information when considering one political agenda over another.

Dale McCormick,

state treasurer, Augusta
