It is time to stand up and vote for the tax changes the Legislature and governor refuse to do. It is time for the people to take matters into our hands.

Here is our chance to vote in June on the Maine Municipal Association referendum to require the Legislature to fund 55 percent of the cost of public education. Only we, the voters, can do this. The Legislature and governor do not want tax reform. They had their chance and did nothing.

By the way, tax reform doesn’t mean all taxes will decrease. Tax reform implies the shifting of tax dollars to different priorities. Tax reform will mean some taxes will go up while others will go down. Our whole problem is we want our cake and want to eat it, too. The answer is to cap spending, but governments do not do this. It is up to the people. Our chance to be heard is June 8.

By the way, if the school funding referendum passes, and we go to our next town meeting and approve all increase requests, guess what – our property taxes will not go down. This is not brain surgery. It is common sense. The problem, there isn’t enough of it.

June 8 is our chance to tell the Legislature what we want.
