In response to the editorial, “Boob tube” (May 26), in which it was bemoaned the four major networks’ decision not to broadcast President Bush’s speech: the White House left it at the major networks’ option whether to carry the speech.

With cable being so prevalent, anyone who wanted to watch the speech could have done so; it was carried on PBS, FOX, MSNBC and CNN.

If it was any other subject that Bush was speaking about, the White House would have told the networks that they wanted the airtime. The purpose of the speech was intended for the citizens of Iraq. Unfortunately, it was 4 a.m. there.

Going into Iraq was a huge blunder, over 800 of our soldiers dead, 4,500 wounded, $200 billion and counting from our treasury, only to be deceived.

The Pentagon has pulled out the 400-strong military team that was searching for WMDs. The team’s leader, David Kay, has testified that WMDs in Iraq do not exist. A chief source of this administration’s intelligence of WMDs was Ahmad Chalabi, a darling of the White House. Bush listened to him and discounted Secretary of State Colin Powell’s warnings. Chalabi is now suspected by the FBI of being a world-class con artist and, worse, a spy for America’s enemies in Iran.
