ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Aubrey Huff homered twice and drove in three runs Sunday, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the New York Yankees 7-6.
Victor Zambrano (5-4) beat the defending AL champions for the third time this season, ending New York’s six-game winning streak. He limited the Yankees to a pair of singles by Hideki Matsui until Enrique Wilson singled with one out in the seventh to give the Yankees runners at first and second.
Not wanting to give New York a chance to cut into a six-run deficit, manager Lou Piniella immediately turned to a bullpen that performed well for the Devil Rays during a 12-game homestand that ended Sunday.
Jorge Sosa struck out Derek Jeter and got Bernie Williams to fly out. But Tampa Bay lost the shutout bid in the eighth when Alex Rodriguez singled, stole second and scored on Matsui’s third hit.
Tony Clark’s RBI single off Sosa cut the lead to 6-2, and the Yankees added two more runs in the eighth on Jeter’s infield single and Geoff Blum’s throwing error, pulling to 6-4.
Brook Fordyce’s solo homer off Tanyon Sturtze in the bottom of the eighth made it 7-5, and Devil Rays closer Danys Baez returned to the mound for the ninth to earn his eighth save in eight opportunities.
Gary Sheffield singled and Ruben Sierra doubled off Baez before Clark hit a two-run single. Jorge Posada then struck out, ending the game.
Rangers 4, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO – Kenny Rogers became the first eight-game winner in the major leagues despite walking seven, and the Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 Sunday to stop a four-game losing streak.
Rogers (8-2) won his fourth straight start, allowing one run – it was unearned – and six hits in 5 1-3 innings. The walks were one shy of his career high.
Rogers, off to the best start of his major league career, has won six times following Texas losses. He escaped a pair of bases-loaded jams, and the Blue Jays tied a season high by stranding 14.
Francisco Cordero pitched two innings for his 16h save in 16 chances, ending Toronto’s five-game winning streak.
Twins 8, Royals 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Alex Prieto hit his first major league homer and Corey Koskie drove in three runs, leading the Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals 8-3 Sunday.
Kyle Lohse (2-4) allowed three runs and nine hits in five-plus innings for his first victory in eight starts. Lohse’s only other victory this year was against the Royals on April 17.
Prieto, a rookie infielder, hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Jimmy Gobble (2-3) following an RBI single by Henry Blanco. The home run came in Prieto’s 37th career at-bat.
Lew Ford, who had a solo homer in the third, was hit by a pitch, and Koskie’s two-run single made it 6-0. Koskie added an RBI single in the ninth.
White Sox 11, Angels 2
CHICAGO – Willie Harris had four hits, Jose Valentin homered and Ross Gload drove in three runs Sunday to lead the Chicago White Sox to an 11-2 win over the Anaheim Angels.
Scoring in double figures for the eighth time this season, the White Sox chased Anaheim starter John Lackey (3-6) after just three innings – matching the shortest outing of his career. He gave up nine hits and eight runs. Lackey also lasted just three innings against the Yankees in April, 2003.
Ex-Angel Scott Schoeneweis (5-2) was the beneficiary of Chicago’s latest offensive outburst. Schoeneweis, who was replaced by Lackey in Anaheim’s rotation in 2002, allowed five hits and two runs in seven innings. Chicago has won nine of 12.
Indians 4, Athletics 3
CLEVELAND (AP) – Matt Lawton scored on a wild pitch by Arthur Rhodes in the ninth inning to give the Cleveland Indians a 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, their third straight win with a late-inning rally.
Omar Vizquel, whose throwing error helped Oakland score twice in the top of the ninth, had a tying RBI double off Rhodes (1-3) as the Indians swept the Athletics with two victories in their last at-bat and an eighth-inning comeback.
Orioles 7, Tigers 3
DETROIT – Ugueth Urbina walked Brian Roberts with the bases-loaded in the ninth-inning to break a tie, and the Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 7-3 victory Sunday.
The Orioles trailed 2-1 entering the ninth against Urbina (1-2), who had not allowed a run at home this season. But the Detroit closer retired only one of the seven batters he faced, blowing his first save in 13 chances since Aug. 31 for the Florida Marlins.
Javy Lopez and Luis Matos started the inning with singles, and B.J. Surhoff followed with a run-scoring hit to tie it.
Urbina walked pinch-hitter Rafael Palmeiro to load the bases, then struck out Robert Machado for the first out. Roberts tried to lay down a suicide squeeze bunt, but fouled it off, then walked on a 3-1 count.
Jerry Hairston followed with his fourth hit of the game, a two-run single off the left-field fence. Jamie Walker replaced Urbina and got the second out before Larry Bigbie, who entered as a pinch-runner for Lopez, hit a two-run single to finish the scoring.
Buddy Groom (2-0) got one out for the win as the Orioles became the first team to sweep the Tigers in Detroit this season.
Ivan Rodriguez had a pair of run-scoring singles for the Tigers, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Tiger starter Mike Maroth allowed an unearned run and six hits in seven innings, while Baltimore’s Erik Bedard gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings.
Detroit went ahead in the third when Greg Norton led off with a double and scored on Rodriguez’s two-out single. The Tigers loaded the bases later in the inning, but Craig Monroe popped out to shortstop.
In the fifth, Bobby Higginson led off with a triple to the scoreboard in right-center and scored on Rodriguez’s bloop single to center.
Baltimore scored in the sixth. Roberts singled with one out, took third on Hairston’s single and scored when Rodriguez threw away a pickoff attempt.
The Tigers made it 7-3 in the ninth off Jorge Julio on Rondell White’s two-out single.
