HARRISON – Residents will gather at the Harrison Elementary School for the annual town meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 9. Besides a few non-monetary issues, voters will be asked to appropriate more than $4.3 million in tax dollars, up from almost $3.7 million last year.

Among the articles on the warrant are several issues that may affect the quality of life in the town.

The town will decide whether to establish tobacco-free zones at Crystal Lake Park and the RADR Sports Complex. Selectmen recently appointed a Crystal Lake Park Improvement Committee “to spruce up and beautify the gem of a park,” Town Manager Michael Thorne said.

The Caswell Public Library has asked that $25,000 be appropriated to put shelving in the new library building and to furnish the children’s room. “From a survey about 10 years ago, the majority of responders wanted more room for children’s services,” said Martha Jackson, president of the board of trustees. In addition, the trustees have requested $34,105 for operating expenses.

The Fire Department has requested $100,000 from the undesignated fund balance for the purchase of the new fire truck. “The time has come to replace the department’s forestry truck,” Fire Chief Anthony Hazelton explained. “This 4-by-4 has been in service since 1961.”

Election of town officers will be held at the town office on June 8. Incumbent Susan Searles-Gaza is running for selectman against Lisa R. Villa. Appeals board member Frank R. White is running unopposed to maintain his seat on the board.

Two positions on the SAD 17 school board are available. R. Andrew Derstine is running for a three-year position on the board. Robert J. Tarbox and Fayralyn A. Davis are contenders for the two-year position.

Two residents are needed to replace outgoing Planning Board members Robert Dann and Arthur Hamblin. As of yet, there are no candidates for the three-year positions.

About 100 of the town’s 2,315 residents attended last year’s meeting.
