I am writing in support of the plans for a new school to replace our Lake Street School in Auburn. The school committee, members of the Lake Street community and our school administrators are to be commended for their perseverance in this process.

Realizing the constraints of the current school budget, it is my hope that the voters in Auburn will have the foresight to support this plan. The Lake Street School facilities make educating our youth a challenge for those who work in the building. Students eat lunch in their classrooms daily as there is no cafeteria, and they are bussed to Webster School for physical education, as well as other limitations.

A new facility would allow each student a new, brighter classroom fully equipped to meet the educational requirements put forth by the Maine Learning Results and the No Child Left Behind Act. The art and music educators would have the opportunity to expand their curriculum due to facilities. The addition of a gymnasium for physical education classes will allow our children to truly integrate skills taught, leading to a healthier lifestyle. The cafeteria would allow students to gather for lunch daily in a cleaner and healthier setting, rather than eating at their desks.

In the past, the voters of Auburn have risen to the occasion and supported our youth in such projects as the Washburn and Fairview school expansions. It is my hope that the Lake Street community will be as fortunate.
