The April 20 edition of the Sun Journal predicted the 2004 track season, saying of the Leavitt Area High School girls team, and I paraphrase, there is not a large youth movement to replace last year’s team, and the team is still searching for two or three breakout athletes to take command of the meets.

“Add in a very tough KVAC Class B this year, and Leavitt may be in the midst of a dreaded rebuilding’ year.”

Fast forward to Bath, May 29, and the KVAC Conference Meet.

The girls put together an enviable performance, winning six events, placing 2nd in two more and smattering in a few 3rd- ,4th-, 5th- and 6th- place finishes, helping the team to a 2nd-place finish.

Breakout athletes, rebuilding – too bad the Sun Journal failed to do its homework. This is a team built on the philosophy of the three Ds: dedication, determination and desire.

Half the team came down with a stomach virus the previous week and three top performers didn’t even suit up for the meet, making the story of their success even more amazing.

Athletes who would have probably missed school and stayed in bed came out to the meet and gave it their best, which turned out to be some amazing performances.

Rebuilding is an excuse for poor performance. We at Leavitt don’t make excuses. We get the job done. Congratulations to every girl who competed with the goal of doing their best and working toward the team success.
