LITCHFIELD – Two candidates are running for one seat on the Board of Selectmen in the only contested race in the municipal election Tuesday.

Lawrence Parlin Jr. is opposing incumbent Bruce Chesley for a three-year term.

Here is a look at the two candidates:

Bruce Chesley

Education: Attended Cony and Messalonskee high schools

Family: Married, two grown children

Occupation: Information specialist for the Maine Parent Federation

Community service: Nine years on the Board of Selectmen, former director of the Maine Autism Society, director of Litchfield Community Bank, former Budget Committee member, instrumental in getting a traffic light installed at Route 126 and Hallowell Road

Chesley said his plans for a fourth term include keeping taxes as low as possible.

Education: Graduated from Monmouth Academy, attended Navy schools

Family: Married to Town Clerk Doris Parlin, five children

Occupation: Retired from the Navy after 24 years service, retired from the Veterans Administration, now a hardware representative for G&G General Store in Litchfield

Community service: Former Litchfield parks and recreation director, second vice commander of American Legion Post 181, and junior warden at Masonic Morning Lodge No. 41

“I’ve been in public service my entire life. I want to better support the community with continued public service. I’m very interested in being an advocate for senior citizens to make sure their quality of life is ensured and an advocate for the young people in the community.”

In other races, incumbent school board members Joan Thomas and Vicki Russell are running unopposed for two seats.

Monmouth Academy Trustee Rayna Leibowitz is running for re-election unopposed. No one filed nomination papers for a second vacancy on the academy’s board.

No candidates are running for two three-year terms on the Budget Committee.

The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Carrie Ricker Middle School.
