NEW YORK – Mike Mussina took a shutout into the ninth inning and Jason Giambi homered in his return from the disabled list, leading the New York Yankees over the Texas Rangers 2-1 Sunday.
Bernie Williams, batting leadoff for the first time in eight years because captain Derek Jeter sat out for the second straight day with a pulled right groin, homered on the first pitch of the fourth inning from Ryan Drese to help the Yankees win for the 11th time in 13 games.
Mussina (7-4) had the Rangers fooled all day, mixing his fastball with a tricky knuckle curve to win his sixth straight decision. He struck out a season-high 10.
Giambi, sidelined since spraining his right ankle May 21, hit his 10th homer in the eighth to make it 2-0.
Indians 7, Angels 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. – C.C. Sabathia held the Anaheim Angels hitless until the sixth inning, and Omar Vizquel hit a two-run homer Sunday in the Cleveland Indians’ 7-0 victory.
Sabathia (3-3) won for the first time in four starts, allowing four hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked two.
David Riske and Matt Miller finished the five-hitter, Cleveland’s third straight win and third shutout of the season.
Athletics 8, Blue Jays 3
OAKLAND, Calif. – Eric Byrnes’ leadoff home run sparked a four-run first inning, and the Oakland Athletics went on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-3.
Damian Miller added a two-run single in the first and Scott Hatteberg broke open the game with a three-run double in the seventh to help the A’s win for the fifth time in six games to match a season best at seven games over .500.
Byrnes homered on the second pitch, and then the A’s showed they could even score without the longball for the first time since Thursday.
Orioles 5, Devil Rays 4
BALTIMORE – Rodrigo Lopez won his second straight start and Rafael Palmeiro and Javy Lopez both had two hits and scored twice, leading the Baltimore Orioles past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4.
B.J. Surhoff drove in two runs for the Orioles, who had lost four in a row since Lopez beat Boston on Monday.
Baldelli also homered for the Devil Rays, Rey Sanchez had two hits and an RBI, and Aubrey Huff had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games – three short of his career high.
Twins 6, Tigers 5
MINNEAPOLIS – Joe Mauer hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot with two outs in the eighth inning to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 6-5 Sunday.
Mauer connected on a 3-1 pitch from Esteban Yan (0-2), capping a two-out rally and giving the slumping Twins a 6-3 lead. Minnesota held on in the ninth for its first series victory after four straight defeats.
J.C. Romero (3-1) won despite giving up a tying single to pinch-hitter Brandon Inge in the eighth.
, and Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances.
Nathan allowed a leadoff homer to Jason Smith and an RBI single by Ivan Rodriguez, snapping his 21-inning scoreless streak. But the reliever retired Rondell White on a long fly and struck out Bobby Higginson to end it.
Tigers starter Nate Robertson blanked the Twins for five innings, running Minnesota’s scoreless drought to 14 innings, its longest of the season. But after Cristian Guzman led off the sixth with a single, Lew Ford hit an 0-1 pitch into the left-field seats for his seventh homer.
Two outs later, Matthew LeCroy jumped on a low fastball and drove it to left-center for his fourth homer and a 3-2 Twins lead.
Minnesota starter Carlos Silva gave up three runs and nine hits in 7 2-3 innings. He lost his chance to earn the win when Inge singled on Romero’s first pitch, driving in Higginson to tie it.
Robertson gave up three runs on seven hits, walked none and fanned five in seven innings.
The Tigers hit six doubles off Silva and had a runner in scoring position in every inning but the seventh.
Detroit scored first on Rodriguez’s RBI double with two outs in the third inning, then doubled its lead in the fifth with the help of Minnesota’s defense.
Smith led off the inning with a double, and Alex Sanchez followed with a bunt single. Third baseman Corey Koskie’s throw hit Sanchez in the arm, and Smith scored on the error.
Notes: LeCroy left after being hit in the right forearm by Yan’s pitch in the eighth inning. … Twins 1B Doug Mientkiewicz batted leadoff for the first time in his six-year career. … Left-handed hitters were batting only .140 against Robertson going into the game. The Twins had four lefties in the starting lineup; they were a combined 1-for-13 against Robertson, with the only hit going to Mientkiewicz on a questionable scoring decision in the seventh. … Ford hit third for the first time in his career.
