JAY – Heidi Purrington asked her classmates not to forget their roots during her valedictory speech during Jay High School’s graduation ceremony Sunday. “These caps and gowns are a representation of the end of an era,” Purrington said.

“We have become the adults that the next generation will look up to,” she continued.

Purrington asked fellow graduates not to forget Jay High School, those who inspired them and their experiences there. “This is where we were prepared to take on the world,” she said.

Seventy-one students received their diplomas. A certificate of achievement was awarded to Matthew Amero and adult education graduate Thomas Oakes received his General Equivalency Diploma.

A veteran and graduate, Eugene V. Roy, was also recognized. Roy enlisted in the Merchant Marine at age 17 in 1944. Roy, who served in World War II delivering supplies to soldiers in Russia, would have graduated in 1946.

Roy earned his General Education Development certificate in 1965 since he wanted to be a good example to his four daughters, who all graduated from Jay High School and went on to further education.

The graduates sat in front of a backdrop decorated with their handprints and their class motto, a quotation from William Blake, “No bird can soar too high if he flies with his own wings.”

Ninety-five awards and scholarships were given, totaling $188,895. Purrington and salutatorian Katherine Bartlett received $20,160 each from the University of Maine Top Scholar Award.

Austin Ouellette received the Brandi Jerry Memorial Award of $275. Jerry died as the result of an automobile accident. Her parents urged everyone to remember to wear their seat belts. The award is in its 10th and final year.

Janna Gilbert received a standing ovation after singing “Follow Love,” as tears could be seen flowing from some graduates’ eyes. She was accompanied on piano by Joel Gilbert.
