CINCINNATI – Ken Griffey Jr. homered twice to increase his career total to 498, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied with three runs in the ninth inning to beat the Montreal Expos 6-5 Sunday.

Pinch-hitter Jacob Cruz hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth that tied the score against Rocky Biddle (0-4), and the Reds won the game on singles by pinch-hitter Barry Larkin, Ryan Freel and D’Angelo Jimenez, who went 3-for-5. Cruz’s homer was his first since May 29, 2002.

Griffey, who had his 50th multihomer game, hit a two-run, opposite-field homer to left in first and a solo shot in the third to tie teammate Adam Dunn and the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols for the major league lead with 17. He has 100 since joining the Reds before the 2000 season.

Griffey has three home runs in Cincinnati’s last two games and nine in his last 14 games. With two more, he would become the 20th major leaguer to reach 500.

After his second homer, Griffey responded to the crowd after the second homer by coming out of the dugout and waving his cap. The crowd of 31,814 booed when Livan Hernandez walked Griffey on four pitches with one out and nobody on in the sixth inning. Griffey flied out in the eighth.

Mike Matthews (1-0) earned the win by getting the final out in the ninth after Montreal had taken a 5-3 lead on pinch-hitter Terrmel Sledge’s two-out RBI single and Brad Wilkerson’s run-scoring bunt single.

Mets 5, Marlins 2

NEW YORK – Mike Piazza hit his third homer in two days and drove in four runs, sending the New York Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Al Leiter pitched two-hit ball for 5 2-3 scoreless innings to help New York gain a split of the four-game series. The Mets finished 6-6 during a key stretch of games against division rivals Philadelphia and Florida.

Piazza hit a two-run double in the first inning and his 371st home run in the fifth. His 13th homer of the season put him in 56th place on the career list, one in front of former Mets manager Gil Hodges and four back of Rocky Colavito.

Giants 16, Rockies 4

DENVER – Barry Bonds homered and Dustin Hermanson won for the first time in seven starts, singled twice and drove in a run in the San Francisco Giants’ 16-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Michael Tucker and Damon Minor each had three RBIs for the Giants, who set a season high for runs and matched their best with 16 hits.

Bonds’ solo shot over the left-field wall in the sixth gave him career homer No. 674 and his 16th this season.

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle told his pitchers to practically walk Bonds no matter what – Hurdle’s “Plan C” – after Jeff Fassero went against the skipper’s instructions Friday night and gave up a homer to the 39-year-old slugger.

Bonds hit his 22nd homer at Coors Field and also had a third-inning single to raise his average in this ballpark to .333 (69-for-207). He flied out in the eighth.

Ramon Hernandez also connected and Sean Burroughs hit a two-run double for the Padres, who moved within two percentage points of first-place Los Angeles in the NL West.

After allowing two runs in the first, Eaton (2-6) retired 15 of 16 batters. He gave up three hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.

Braves 6, Phillies 4

ATLANTA – Kevin Millwood remained winless against his former team, allowing a go-ahead, three-run homer to J.D. Drew in a six-run fifth inning that led the Atlanta Braves over the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 Sunday.

Millwood (4-4) wasted a four-run lead and dropped to 0-6 with a 9.10 ERA in six starts against Atlanta, which traded him to Philadelphia for catcher Johnny Estrada on Dec. 20, 2002. Millwood allowed six runs, eight hits and three walks in 4 2-3 innings.

Cubs 4, Pirates 1

CHICAGO – Greg Maddux gave the Chicago Cubs their third straight strong start, allowing four hits over seven innings Sunday in a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Aramis Ramirez hit a solo home run for the Cubs, who have won two in a row after losing eight of 10. The Pirates have lost seven of eight.

Maddux (5-4), following Mark Prior and Carlos Zambrano in the rotation, struck out six and walked none. He gave up his only run in the third, when Tike Redman blooped a single, Ryan Vogelsong (1-6) sacrificed and Jason Kendall singled to put the Pirates ahead.

LaTroy Hawkins pitched the ninth for his fourth save in six chances.

After giving up a single to Derrek Lee in the second inning, Vogelsong retired 14 of his next 15 batters.

Ramirez homered to tie the score in the seventh, a drive that went through a basket and dropped on the field. Bench coach Pete Mackanin, managing the Pirates while Lloyd McClendon serves a suspension, questioned the call by third base umpire Mark Carlson.

Todd Hollandsworth followed with a single, Lee was hit by a pitch and Mike Gonzalez relieved. Patterson flied out, with Hollandsworth advancing to third, and pinch-hitter Michael Barrett hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.

Chicago added two runs in the eighth on Jose Macias’ RBI single and second baseman Abraham Nunez’s run-scoring throwing error.

Vogelsong allowed two runs and four hits in six-plus innings.
