WILTON – John Welch began his duties as the new Public Works foreman last week. Last month, when Town Manager Peter Nielsen, Selectman Jeff Rowe and Selectman Rodney Hall interviewed seven of the 13 people applied for the position, they unanimously chose Welch. Officials approved the selection during their selectmen’s meeting Tuesday.

A Wilton resident, Welch has a full time driver in the Public Works Department for the past four years. Before that, he was a truck driver as a farm manager in Massachusetts. He was also a construction company foreman, where he directed crews and coordinated snow removal services. Welch has a Class A driver’s license.

In other business, officials toured the Renaissance School, formerly the Wilton Primary School, in the SAD 9 building on School Street. Nielsen said that by law, SAD 9 must offer the building to the town if the district no longer wants it.

Evergreen Behavioral Services in Farmington would like to assume ownership of the building prior to making any improvements to it. The organization plans to prepare a proposal outlining their reasons for wanting the building. Town officials then plan to set up a public forum to gain input from Wilton residents.

Officials plan to bring the issues before voters at a town meeting, which would take place some time after this month’s annual town meeting. Voting on the building’s future will either take place at a special town meeting or at next year’s annual town meeting, Nielsen said.
