NEW GLOUCESTER – Two bids were submitted to New Gloucester selectmen Monday for the upcoming purchase of a two-wheel-drive diesel truck, complete with chassis and cab.
Selectmen say the truck will be added to the fleet to plow a section of Route 26, which will be returned to the town once a bypass and upgrade is finished by the Maine Department of Transportation this fall.
Bids were submitted by Whited Truck Center of Auburn at $49,916, and Morrison and Sylvester of Auburn at $59,230. Selectmen will make a final decision on awarding the bid after reviewing the proposals, said Chairman Steve Libby.
In other business, selectmen approved an application by AMVET Post 6 for a license to operate a beano/bingo game for six months.
The application is submitted to the Maine Department of Public Safety’s Gaming and Weapons Section.
Instead of granting the approval each time an event is planned, the board issued a blanket approval to cover 27 sessions from July to December.
Finally, selectmen agreed to have Town Manager Rosemary Kulow collect information on mass-gathering ordinance procedures that may be needed in the future.
A bluegrass festival from June 25 to 27 is expected to bring 4,000 people to Thompson’s Orchards on Gloucester Hill Road. And, 1,800 people are expected to attend a lobster feed at Pineland sponsored by Irving Oil in September.
Fire Chief Gary Sacco says the demand on emergency services may require that extra expenses be defrayed by event sponsors.
New Gloucester relies on a volunteer fire and rescue department and does not have ambulance transportation. Ambulance service is provided by United Ambulance.
