NEW VINEYARD – Two men were arrested after a high-speed chase through New Vineyard and North Anson Tuesday.

Aaron Sargent, 27, of Skowhegan, and Logan Wilmot, 24, whose last known address was in Winslow, were heading to Madison, they said, when their 1987 Dodge pickup ran off the road on Route 27 in New Vineyard. Franklin County sheriffs received a report of a car off the road at 10:50 a.m. and shortly thereafter received a report of an assault in progress at 1927 New Vineyard Road (Route 27) .

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Aaron Turcotte was first at the scene, only seconds after the report, and found blood in the driveway. No one answered the door at the residence. Cpl. Stephen Charles and Det. David St. Laurent also assisted at the scene.

As Turcotte was leaving the scene, he spotted a vehicle driving by that fit the description given by a witness. He attempted to stop the vehicle when the operator sped away. Heading north on Route 27, the driver turned onto Route 234, heading toward North Anson. He was eventually stopped in North Anson after leading officers on a 67 mph chase, nearly losing control several times, according to Turcotte.

Sargent, the driver, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, operating after suspension, attempting to elude an officer, attempted burglary and assault. Wilmot was arrested and charged with assault, theft, attempted burglary and violation of probation. Both were taken to the Franklin County Jail, where they are being held. Wilmot is being held without bail and Sargent is being held on $1,500 bail.

The assault victim, Raymond Wisniewski, 42, was later found at his residence by St. Laurent. He had sustained injuries to the face and head but refused medical attention.

The two assailants were allegedly in the vehicle that had been reported off the road before the assault incident. They had gone to Wisniewski’s home and had attempted to break in to take keys to a vehicle parked there, police said, but when Wisniewski tried to stop them they assaulted him. A witness who reported the assault saw the pair kicking Wisniewski in the head in front of his home, police said.
