NORWAY – A click of the mouse and you are surfing through a list of 82 cats waiting for adoption at Responsible Pet Care.
Click on any one cat’s photo and get a detailed description of the cat’s age, type, disposition and any special needs.
It’s a one stop cat shop, part of a database of more than 146,000 adoptable pets available through the shelter’s online partner, Petfinder.org.
The nonprofit Route 118 shelter is one of 34 Maine shelters and rescue organizations that have linked up with the national Web site. Others include the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Auburn, the Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg, and the Franklin County Animal Shelter in Farmington.
Shelters have traditionally relied on local newspapers to show photos of their adoptable charges – which often results in successful adoptions.
Rascal, one of Responsible Pet Care’s cats, has special needs, the description states.
“He does use his litter box, but sometimes does not make it there in time.” It is likely he will need to be on medication the rest of his life. Otherwise, the description reads, he is affectionate, loves to play, gets along with other cats, and is “a great little guy.”
Previously, such detail was obtainable only by visiting the shelter and talking to staff.
Cats from the Norway shelter have been listed as the featured pet on the Petfinder.org Web site this month, which is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month as proclaimed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The shelter’s Web site also lists its coming fund-raising events – yard sales June 26, July 10 and Sept. 4; a Chinese auction Sept. 25 at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School; and a Longaberger Basket Bingo Oct. 31 at the American Legion Hall on Route 121 in Oxford.
The Web site also contains a list of items that the shelter regularly seeks as donations, and describes volunteer and foster care opportunities.
The cost to adopt a cat from the shelter is $65, which includes all shots and tests. More information may be obtained by calling 743-8679.
