BERGEN, Norway (AP) – Elvan Abeylegesse of Turkey set the women’s 5,000-meter world at the Bislett Games on Friday night, cutting more than three seconds off the previous mark.

Breaux Greer set the American record in the javelin, winning the event with a throw of 286 feet, 8 inches. That broke the mark of 285-10 set by Tom Puktys in 1997.

Greer’s previous personal best was 285-5 in 2001. His mark Friday night was the second-longest in the world this year, behind the 287-10 of Alexandr Ivanov of Russia set Tuesday in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Sergey Makarov of Russia was second to Greer at 282-9. Ivanov was fifth at 267-6. The 27-year-old Greer is the two-time defending U.S. champion in the event and finished 12th in the Sydney Olympics.

He competed collegiately at Northeast Louisiana and lives in Athens, Ga.

Abeylegesse, who pulled away from the pack with five laps to go, was timed in 14 minutes, 24.68 seconds. Bo Jiang of China had the record of 14:28.09, set in 1997 in Shanghai.

The meet was held at Fana Stadium for the first time while Bislett Stadium in Oslo – where 52 world records have been set – is being renovated.

Ethiopian runners took the next five places, with runner-up Tirunesh Dibaba setting a junior world record of 14:30.88. Ejegayehu Dibaba was third at 14:35.18.

Abeylegesse, 21, was born in Ethiopia but became a Turkish citizen in 1999.

“I didn’t get enough support from my federation in Ethiopia,” she said. “My track club in Turkey gave me all the support I needed.”

She got all the support she needed from the fans on a chilly night.

“They supported me all race long and helped me get the record,” Abeylegesse said. “I’ve worked hard to make this, day and night, summer and winter.”

American Gail Devers won the 100-meter hurdles in 12.56, well off her world-best time this year of 12.33. Devers, 37, is a three-time Olympic champion with two gold medals in the 100 meters, and one in the hurdles. Perdita Felicien of Canada, last year’s world champion, was second at 12.66.

Shawn Crawford led a 1-2 finish for the United States in the men’s 200 meters, winning in 20.31. Justin Gatlin was second in 20.39. John Capel, last year’s world champion, was seventh.

The United States also had a double in the women’s 100, with Torri Edwards winning in 11.21 seconds, seven-hundredths of a second ahead of Latasha Colander.
