In checking flagpole in Webster’s Dictionary, the definition reads as such: “n. a pole on which a flag is raised and flown.”

So, my assumption is, that all the flagpoles that are in existence in the Twin Cities are flying the American flag.

Lo, and behold, there are flagpoles in the Twin Cities that haven’t had a flag on them for many years. Some of these flagpoles have the eagle crest on top of the pole. Incidentally, two of the flagpoles are on a high building and the poles are visible, no matter on which road, you come into the center and heart of Lewiston.

And yet, though the flag is silent, it speaks to us, speaks to us of the past, of the men and women who went before us and of the records they wrote upon it.

War in every generation has changed many lives and with the advent of Sept. 11, the picture has changed dramatically, and we are suddenly awake; that our freedom of life and the pursuit of happiness is being challenged right in our own backyards.

Remember those who are now fighting and giving their lives for everything America stands for.

Fly the American flag every day!
