I was saddened to read Paul Madore’s contention that his election loss was due to an article in the Sun Journal (June 9). By saying that the Sun Journal article “was effective and did deter the will of the voters” Mr. Madore gives this newspaper far too much credit in its ability to influence voters.

But, far worse than his opinion about the Sun Journal, is the insulting opinion he has of the voters. Apparently, with the exception of the 957 who were somehow able to withstand the withering media assault on Mr. Madore, the remainder of the people in his district possess character flaws that doomed his campaign.

If we follow Mr. Madore’s logic, we can see that some of the voters were so shallow and easily deceived that, instead of being swayed by issues, they read the article and were compelled to change their vote and support his opponent. Others were so confused that they abandoned plans to vote for him and stayed home. And neither group of citizens was smart enough to weigh the issues and cast their vote for the candidate they thought would represent them best.

I would advise Mr. Madore that if he intends to get elected in the future, he should develop a healthier respect for the people he hopes to represent.
