PORTLAND (AP) – Garrett Jones went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Boof Bonser threw six strong innings as the New Britain Rock Cats beat the Portland Sea Dogs 6-2 Saturday in the Eastern League.

Jeff Bailey homered in the Sea Dogs’ loss.

The Rock Cats (29-30) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when James Tomlin singled, stole second and third and scored on a groundout.

Joe Kilburg doubled and George Lombard tripled as the Sea Dogs (28-33) tied it in the bottom of the inning.

New Britain scored three in the second on singles by Jones, Matt Scanlon and B.J. Garbe – and aided by a Portland error. Jones’ homer with a runner aboard scored two in the eighth.

Portland’s second run of the game came in the second inning on Bailey’s eighth homer of the season. The Sea Dogs failed to advance a runner past first base after the second.

Bonser struck out five, walked two and gave up two runs over six innings as he improved his record to 4-5. Portland starter Josh Stevens dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
